CHAPTER 16

Being Arrested in Hong Kong - Values Based Practical Leadership

“It’s only a cut, a reminder of this day. A reminder to ask every day, Why am I doing this?” — Victor Robert Lee

Values are the critical set of guiding principles nurtured within us by parents, family, relatives, chosen friends, teachers, coaches, and people we admire— they are our “golden rules.” Your grandmother probably said to you, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all.” That was her way of teaching you the value of respect (for others and yourself).

Values are also those things that you, quite frankly, value in your life. Like your family, loved ones, reputation, being viewed as someone who is honest, helpful, trustworthy, hardworking, etc. The television news and daily newspapers are packed with politicians, sports stars, and celebrities who have crossed a line and had their names and reputations ruined because they either lacked or violated their values.

As an example, one of my top values is freedom. I never realized how much it meant to me and how important it was for me truly to live in harmony with my values until it was once briefly taken away.

I used to wonder why in some work situations I could not get over the feeling of being trapped. That feeling always hit me when I was confronted with a manager who was hugely dictatorial or unfocused. What usually happened was the manager would be heavily micro-managing me on the most ridiculous details. I would get frustrated but never really understood why. As a result, I would often morph into all kinds of unrecognizable people in order somehow to appease the autocrat who was out-of-control.

Then it hit me in a very memorable way—and this is a very hard story for me to tell because of the feelings that it brings back.

I was on a flight from Vancouver to Mumbai for a client project. I was flying with the remarkable airline Cathay Pacific and had to change planes in Hong Kong. There was absolutely nothing unusual about the flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong, other than the outstanding service from the Cathay Pacific team. When I arrived in Hong Kong, I had to, like all passengers, go through another security screening. It was 7 p.m. and I had a scant thirty minutes to catch my connecting flight to Mumbai. At the security-screening checkpoint, I routinely removed my laptop and liquids from my carry-on bag and placed my belongings onto the conveyor belt leading to the x-ray machine. When I stepped through the metal detector, an awaiting security guard asked me “Is this carry-on bag yours” as she pointed to my carry-on bag that had now been pulled aside. I replied that it was. She asked me whether I was carrying scissors.
